Supreme Court order a temporary relief, fight will continue, says Unnao rape survivor’s lawyer

Seven days since the Unnao rape survivor and her family protested against the Delhi High Court’s order of granting former BJP MLA Kuldeep Singh Sengar conditional bail in the rape case, the Supreme Court has stayed the order.

Speaking to the media, lawyer of the Unnao rape survivor Mehmood Pracha said that while this should not be treated as a victory, it could be seen as a “temporary relief“. “She kept asking me if she will be safe after Delhi High Court’s order, now at least I can assure her that the Supreme Court has granted her a temporary relief. The fight will continue,” he said.

The order given by Supreme Court on Monday (December 29, 2025) has not only given confidence to the survivor but also lifted the spirits of the protesters. Yogita Bhayan, founder of Pari, who has been protesting alongside the survivor, said the Supreme Court had restored her faith in the judiciary. “We had protested when the Congress government was in power and will continue to protest for her safety during the BJP rule as well. We are grateful that the Supreme Court has taken cognisance of the dangers of the Delhi High Court order,” she said.

Opposes SC order

Meanwhile, Sengar’s daughter, Ishita Sengar took to social media platform X to pen an open letter in opposition to the Supreme Court order, calling it a reaction to the public outrage. “If pressure and public frenzy begin to overshadow evidence and due process, what protection does an ordinary citizen truly have?” she wrote in the post.

Further, she wrote that due to the case being in public domain, facts were not given their due place. “Please let the law speak without fear. Please let evidence be examined without pressure. Please let truth be treated as truth even when it is unpopular,” her post read.
