A Supreme Court Bench of Justices Vikram Nath and Sandeep Mehta has banned any construction or development within 100 metres of Jojari River in Rajasthan,hearing a suo motu case on Monday (August 24, 2026).
The court also prohibited hazardous industries within 500 metres of the river’s flow path. This is the latest in a series of orders passed by the court to protect the seasonal river, which has faced a barrage of contamination that has affected around two million lives in the water-starved State.
The Supreme Court on August 4, suggested that the Rajasthan government prepare a 20-point resolution plan to deal with the issue of contamination in the Jojari, Bandi and Luni rivers in the State.
The Jojari river passes through Jodhpur, the Bandi river flows through Pali, and the Luni river runs through Balotra. The Bandi and Jojari rivers merge with the Luni river near Balotra city.
The Supreme Court said that the entire industrial area in Pali is located along the river bank and in the long run, the State authorities may have to consider relocating industries away from the river.
“Let the State come out with a resolution plan,” it said.
