Hyderabad recorded 3,785 road accidents in 2024, ranking as the third most accident-prone city in the country after Delhi (5,573) and Bengaluru (4,769), according to the National Crime Records Bureau’s Accidental Deaths and Suicides in India 2024 report.
The city witnessed a sharp 28.6% rise in accidents compared to 2,943 cases in 2023. The accidents in Hyderabad claimed 301 lives and left 3,393 persons injured during the year.
Two-wheelers accounted for the largest share of fatalities and injuries in the city, resulting in 161 deaths and 2,072 injuries. Accidents involving three-wheelers or autorickshaws led to 10 deaths and 238 injuries, while cars, jeeps and SUVs accounted for eight deaths and 125 injuries.
Pedestrians continued to remain among the worst affected. A total of 117 pedestrians were killed and 907 injured in road accidents across Hyderabad in 2024.
The NCRB data showed that most accidents in Hyderabad occurred during peak traffic hours. The highest number of accidents was reported between 6 p.m. and 9 p.m., with 593 cases, followed by 559 accidents between noon and 3 p.m. and 553 cases between 3 p.m. and 6 p.m.
Meanwhile, Telangana recorded 25,986 road accident cases in 2024, placing the State seventh in the country in terms of total accidents. The State reported a 13.5% rise in accidents compared to 22,903 cases in 2023. The accidents claimed 7,949 lives and left 23,658 persons injured during the year.
Tamil Nadu recorded the highest number of road accidents nationally with 67,296 cases, followed by Madhya Pradesh with 55,771, Kerala with 46,591, Karnataka with 43,062, Uttar Pradesh with 38,417 and Maharashtra with 36,051.
Two-wheelers accounted for the overwhelming majority of deaths and injuries in Telangana, with 4,216 deaths and 12,425 injuries linked to such accidents. Cars, jeeps and SUVs followed with 651 deaths and 2,907 injuries, while heavy vehicles, including trucks, mini-trucks and lorries, accounted for 385 deaths and 1,199 injuries.
Accidents involving autorickshaws claimed 336 lives and left 1,866 persons injured, while bus accidents resulted in 109 deaths and 601 injuries.
Pedestrian fatalities also remained high across the State. A total of 1,586 pedestrians were killed and 3,767 injured in road accidents during 2024.
The evening rush-hour period between 6 p.m. and 9 p.m. proved to be the most dangerous in the State with 5,428 cases, followed by 4,856 accidents between 3 p.m. and 6 p.m. and 3,948 cases between noon and 3 p.m. The lowest number of accidents was reported between 3 a.m. and 6 a.m., with 1,246 cases.
State roads accounted for the highest share of accidents in Telangana, with 15,359 crashes leading to 4,197 deaths and 13,967 injuries.
National Highways followed with 8,594 accidents, which claimed 3,065 lives and injured 7,873 persons. State Highways recorded 2,028 accidents, resulting in 686 deaths and 1,815 injuries. Expressways witnessed only five accidents during the year, leading to one death and three injuries.
