Officials of several States stepped up efforts to trace people missing or stranded after the devastating flash floods in Nepal, with Chief Ministers urging departments to coordinate to ensure prompt rescue measures. The State governments were also in touch with the Centre to bring back stranded residents.

In West Bengal, the focus was on a group of 32 people who had travelled for the Kailash-Mansarovar Yatra and remained untraceable. Among the 32, at least 21 are senior citizens, and many others are in their late 50s. Sharmistha Bhowmik Roy, daughter-in-law of former Union Minister Mukul Roy, is also part of the group.
“The Government of West Bengal is actively coordinating with the Embassy of India in Kathmandu and proper administrative channels,” Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari posted on social media.
The group had booked their trip with Cholo Jai, a travel agency in West Bengal, and started from Kolkata on August 21. Samrat Travels, their partner company, handles the Nepal portion of the trip.
Cholo Jai staff were not able to establish contact with the group. According to the agency, the group left their hotel in Nepal’s Rasuwagadhi on Wednesday morning and headed towards the China border. Around 8.30 a.m., they went to the immigration office in the same area to cross over to Tibet. Rasuwagadhi is one of the worst hit areas in the flash flood.
“Today morning, four managers from our company went there to get local information and further details about the rescue operations. We are constantly in touch with families,” Manish Singh, a Cholo Jai staffer, told media.
A film crew from Bengal is also stuck in Nepal. They are in a safe zone and accessible by phone.
In Tamil Nadu, Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay directed Ministers and officials to oversee the rescue and safe return of people from the State. A total of 103 people from Tamil Nadu who had gone on a pilgrimage were stranded in Nepal due to the devastating floods on Wednesday. Several of them were feared missing.
80 pilgrims missing
Isha Foundation, based in Coimbatore in the State, said a pilgrim group with 80 members from several countries was missing in the floods. The foundation has reached out to the Embassies for authoritative information on the missing members, it added. In a video message from the Tibet side of the Chinese border, founder of Isha Foundation Sadhguru Jaggi Vasudev said the pilgrim group consisted of 34 men and 46 women.
The Keralam government confirmed that it received around 17 distress calls from families affected by the Nepal disaster. The government said it was trying to establish contact with the 53 stranded persons from the State and ensure their safety.
Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu directed officials to maintain round-the-clock vigil on the Nepal situation and ensure all possible assistance. Sources from A.P. Bhavan said seven from the State were reported missing or stranded. Four pilgrims from Adoni and Kurnool were found to be safe and staying at a hotel in China, while efforts continued to locate three others. The four traced pilgrims were part of a 156-member Kailash-Mansarovar group.
The Telangana government said it had provisionally identified 23 residents of the State who were stranded in Nepal. The State government was coordinating with the External Affairs Ministry, the Indian Embassy in Kathmandu and Nepalese authorities. On Thursday, the Ministry said at least 290 Indian nationals remained “uncontactable” after the tragedy in Nepal.
