Chief Minister M.K. Stalin on Thursday virtually inaugurated ₹14.50 crore campus for Government Arts and Science College at Pachur village near Jolarpet town in Tirupattur.

Officials of Higher Education said that the new permanent campus for the government college has ended the ordeal of 230 students, including over 100 women students, as they have been attending classes at a temporary accomodation within Government Higher Secondary School in the village since 2023, when the college officially started its functions.

The single-storey building consists of 16 classrooms, five science laboratories and a large library for students. It also has separate rooms for administrative work, teachers, canteen, washrooms and a parking area for two-wheelers and cars. LED lights were provided for better brightness in classrooms. Rooftop solar panels were installed to provide clean energy to some of the electrical equipment in the campus. As part of security measures, CCTV cameras were installed in the campus, with a compound wall and grill fencing to prevent intruders, especially after college hours.

“We will move to the permanent campus in the coming days. Apart from studies, students at the government college can pursue extracurricular activities on the new campus,” V. Senthil Kumar, Principal of the college, told The Hindu.

In terms of academics, the college offers five UG courses in Geography, Commerce, Tamil, Botany and Computer Science. More courses will be introduced for students in the coming years, the principal said.

Spread over five acres, the college enrolls students from more than 25 surrounding villages, including tribal hamlets, near Tamil Nadu-Andhra Pradesh border area. “The new campus also helps us train in various sports activities. More buses should be operated to the new college campus to attend classes on time,” said S. Vinod, a student.
