The Bidhannagar Police formed a six-member Special Investigation Team (SIT) on Sunday (July 5, 2026) to probe allegations that former Trinamool Congress councillor Debraj Chakraborty, who is also the husband of former Rajarhat-Gopalpur MLA Aditi Munshi, amassed disproportionate assets worth over ₹100 crore.
Officials said the SIT will be headed by a DCP-rank officer and will also include the officer-in-charge of Baguiati police station and four other members. Police said that they will probe allegations of extortion, land grabbing, organised crime and investments in multiple companies, which are allegedly disproportionate to Mr. Chakraborty’s known sources of income.
The development comes days after a team of the Special Task Force of the West Bengal Police arrested Mr. Chakraborty near the Bengal-Jharkhand border in Purulia on Wednesday night, where he was allegedly hiding. Known as a close associate of Trinamool Congress national general secretary Abhishek Banerjee, Mr. Chakraborty had represented Ward number 7 of the Bidhannagar Municipal Corporation and served as a Mayor-in-Council (MIC) member till February 2022.
The arrest was based on an FIR lodged ahead of the 2026 West Bengal Assembly election by the current BJP MLA of the Rajarhat-Gopalpur constituency, Tarunjyoti Tewari. In the FIR, he accused Mr. Chakraborty and Ms. Munshi of illegal land-grabbing, extortion, criminal intimidation and amassing assets disproportionate to their income.
“It was alleged that Mr. Chakraborty and his wife acquired properties through undisclosed income and made false statements before the Election Commission. There are unexplained assets worth more than ₹100 crore, which are disproportionate to their income. Mr. Chakraborty also made substantial investments through the proprietorship firm DC Global. The couple also allegedly transferred several properties to their relatives’ names,” said a police officer.
During the investigation, police also traced a large amount of money credited to some of the couple’s bank accounts ahead of the Assembly election, which was allegedly abruptly withdrawn after the results were declared.
Police have not taken any action against Ms. Munshi as the Calcutta High Court granted her anticipatory bail on June 24, considering that she has a four-month-old child.
Justice Jay Sengupta denied anticipatory bail to Mr. Chakraborty. The court also directed Ms. Munshi, a singer-turned-politician, to surrender her passport before a lower court and cooperate with the investigation.
