The State Human Rights Commission (SHRC) has sought the urgent intervention of the government to secure housing for a Scheduled Caste circus artiste, his wife, also a circus performer, and their three children.
Acting on a petition filed by K. Hari of Kannur, the Commission instructed the District Collector to take immediate steps and report back within three months.
The petitioner said that his father had been evicted from a house allotted under a Military Madras Circle lease agreement without any compensation. The family had lived in the house for 76 years and is currently staying in a rented facility.
Responding on behalf of the District Collector, the Tahsildar informed the Commission that the elderly couple relied solely on the circus pension. The report said that the State government could not intervene in matters related to property taken over by the Defence department.
He also said that the petitioner did not own land or a house in Kannur district and was eligible for land or housing assistance under the applicable schemes.
