The second edition of the Indian Ocean Ship (IOS) SAGAR commenced on March 16, reaffirming India’s commitment to collaborative maritime security in the Indian Ocean Region.

The latest edition assumes greater significance as the Indian Navy took over the chairmanship of the Indian Ocean Naval Symposium (IONS) in February 2026. Reflecting this leadership role, the programme includes participation from 16 IONS member nations across the Indian Ocean Region.

IOS SAGAR is a key initiative aligned with India’s strategic vision of Security and Growth for All in the Region (SAGAR), while also contributing to the broader MAHASAGAR framework — Mutual and Holistic Advancement for Security Across the Regions.

Designed as a unique operational engagement programme, IOS SAGAR enables naval personnel from friendly foreign countries to train and sail together onboard an Indian Naval ship. The initiative aims to enhance interoperability, foster professional exchanges, and build a shared understanding of maritime operations through hands-on experience, it added.

As part of the current edition, naval personnel from 16 partner nations will undergo professional training at Indian naval establishments in Kochi. The training will cover critical areas, including naval operations, seamanship, and maritime security.

Following the shore-based phase, participants will embark on an Indian Naval ship for joint deployment at sea, where they will engage in operational activities alongside Indian Navy personnel.

The voyage will also include maritime engagements and port visits, providing opportunities for interaction with regional navies and maritime agencies. These engagements are expected to strengthen professional linkages, promote the exchange of best practices, and deepen cooperation in addressing common maritime challenges.

The initiative underscores India’s growing role as a key maritime partner in the region, and its continued focus on fostering a secure, stable and cooperative maritime environment in the Indian Ocean.
