A three-day Sahyadri environmental summit, jointly organised by the Wayanad Prakruthi Samrakshana Samiti and Hume Centre for Ecology, focusing on critical ecological challenges facing the Western Ghats and other regions, will begin at Thrikkaipetta Bamboo Grove in Wayanad district on Saturday (January 24).
Kumar Kalanand Mani, Director of Goa Peace Foundation, will open the summit, which will bring together environmental activists, scientists, subject experts, and representatives of environmental organisations from all districts of Kerala, along with delegates from neighbouring States.
According to the organisers, several eminent environmentalists and researchers, including Mahendra Vyas, former member of the Supreme Court-appointed Central Empowered Committee on Forestry and Wildlife; Praveen Bhargav, former member of the National Board for Wildlife; Prakriti Srivastava, former Chief Wildlife Warden; and C.S. Easa, former director of the Kerala Forest Research Institute, are expected to present papers at the event.
The sessions will be handled by experts from various premier institutions and universities, including the Kerala Forest Research Institute and the Kerala University of Fisheries and Ocean Studies. Key themes to be discussed at the summit include degradation and restoration of the Western Ghats, rapidly evolving environmental laws in India, development paradigms, coastal ecosystem, human-wildlife conflict and water-related disasters.
