Officers of the Crime Intelligence Branch (CIB), Government Railway Police (GRP) and the Railway Protection Force (RPF) seized about 190 kgs of ganja, worth ₹9.79 lakhs in various operations in Vijayawada Division.

Surprise raids were conducted at Rajahmundry, Samalkot, Gudur, Ongole and Bapatla railway stations under ‘Operation NARCOS’, from October 24 to 30 to check ganja smuggling in trains, said public relations officer Nusrat M. Mandrupkar.

“Acting on the complaints from the informants and passenger complaints received through ‘Rail Madad’ and intelligence inputs, the enforcement agencies crackdown on Marijuana (ganja) smugglers and seized the contraband,” Ms. Nusrat said on Friday.

The GRP officers registered cases under Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropics Substances (NDPS) Act, 1985 in concerned stations and investigation is on, an officer investigang the cases told The Hindu on Friday.

“The operation was taken up for passenger safety in moving trains and in the stations, The Crime Prevention and Detection Squads (CPDS) have kept constant vigil on ganja smugglers,” Ms. Nusrat said.
