Deputy Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar speaks during the Winter Session of the Assembly in Belagavi on Tuesday.
The Greater Bengaluru Authority (GBA) has decided to cancel the round robin system that had been introduced to provide new khatas and e-khatas for properties, and will revert to the old system, according to Deputy Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar.
He was speaking in the Assembly during Question Hour, replying to BJP member K. Gopalaiah, who alleged that the round robin system had inconvenienced the public.
The Deputy Chief Minister pointed out that only about 6,450 applications regarding e-khata were pending for now before the five city corporations under GBA.
Scientific processing centres
Meanwhile, replying to BJP member Dheeraj Muniraju, the Deputy Chief Minister said that it had been proposed to set up two scientific waste processing centres in northern and southern regions of Bengaluru to handle waste from the five city corporations of Bengaluru.
While 134 acres and 10 guntas of land had been identified in Gundalahalli village of Doddabelavangala hobli in Doddaballapura taluk, 84 acres and 14 guntas and 31 acres and 14 guntas of lands in two survey numbers had been identified in Gollahalli of Uttarahalli hobli in Bengaluru South taluk for setting up these centres, he said.
He explained that presently Bengaluru city was generating about 5,600 tonnes of waste a day, but the processing capacity was only 3,000 tonnes a day. This had resulted in large quantities of waste going to landfills. This had impacted public health, he observed.
He explained that the proposed waste processing centres aim to generate bio-gas and production of compost from wet waste and recycling of dry waste besides power generation.
Such centres would be set up in a few other places within and outside Bengaluru including his Assembly constituency Kanakapura, he said.
Using black soldier fly
Referring to the experiment of turning waste into compost by using black soldier fly that eats waste and turns into compost that had been praised by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, he said the experiment would be taken up in Bengaluru too.
