The Tiruppur South constituency, an entirely urban segment spread across 21 wards in the city limits, accounts for most of the knitwear units carrying out 40,000 crore worth export business.

The major industrial hub is struggling to cater to the infrastructure needs, particularly adequacy of roads.

Traffic snarls are a daily problem in the constituency represented by K. Selvaraj of DMK who had prevailed over S. Gunasekaran of AIADMK in the 2021 polls.

According to Shivakumar, trader in the Old Bus Stand area, the road infrastructure is grossly inadequate vis-a-vis the large presence of industries. The authorities have not been successful in removing encroachments, he adds.

Visalakshi, another resident, wondered why the ruling DMK MLA could not prevail upon the government to take steps for extension of flyover from Thennampalayam to the railway station.

Inadequacy of hostels for migrant workers from other States, and the stink caused by garbage heaps that had surfaced along streets because of absence of any alternative to discard the wastes are major causes for concern.

The ruling DMK has come under criticism from a a cross-section of the residents since a multi-crore commercial complex belonging to the City Corporation near the old bus stand has not been opened for several months.

Over the years, there has been notable progress in supply of drinking water.

Water is now being supplied once a week, owing to the implementation of drinking water projects. And, work on establishing stormwater drainage and construction of four bridges are underway.

The residents are, by and large, happy with the upgrade of schools and anganwadis with additional classrooms and basic amenities.

This time, the DMK has allotted the Tiruppur North seat to the Mayor of Tiruppur City Corporation N. Dinesh Kumar, while the BJP has fielded S. Thangaraj. A four-cornered contest is being talked about as NTK candidate Dinesh and TVK candidate S. Balamurugan are also in fray.

There has been a sharp decline in the number of voters after the SIR exercise. The names of as many as 78,681 voters have been deleted.

The pollution caused to the Noyyal due to discharges of untreated effluent by a section of industries, lag in the pace of works underway for construction of roads on either sides of Noyyal river, and inadequacy of hostels for migrant workers from other States are seen as major unresolved issues for long.
