Reverse osmosis (RO) water treatment plants have been installed in 41 government-run and government-aided schools in the Kalamassery Assembly constituency as part of a project aimed at ensuring supply of potable water to students.

Minister for Industries P. Rajeeve on Monday inaugurated the project at St. Thomas’ School, Ayiroor.

The RO plants have been installed at a total cost of ₹3 crore. Tanks with a capacity of 500 litres have been set up at each school spending ₹7.16 lakh. A project named ‘Jaladhara’ has been implemented with the support of Cochin International Airport Limited.

Speaking on the occasion, the Minister said around ₹30 crore had been spent in his constituency for projects related to schools, including infrastructure development. He added that the ‘Poshakasamrudham Prabhathabhakshanam’ project that was in Kalamassery was a first in the State.

Free breakfast is served to students of all lower primary and upper primary schools in the constituency with the support of Bharat Petroleum Corporation Limited. “Mobile phones and laptops were provided to students who could not attend online classes during the pandemic with the help of various organisations,” Mr. Rajeeve said.

Saina Babu, president, Kunnukara grama panchayat, chaired the meet.
