Amid rumblings in the Muslim voter base, the Congress government — just weeks short of turning three years — is hoping to retain both Davangere South and Bagalkot constituencies, even as the BJP is confident of winning both. The result of the bypolls will be announced on Monday.
The Congress’s Samarth Mallikarjun is fighting BJP’s T. Srinivas Dasakariappa in Davangere South to retain the seat within his family after the demise of his grandfather Shamanur Shivashankarappa, a veteran Congress leader. Mr. Samarth’s selection had caused heartburn among Muslim leaders that has sent ripples within the party.
