The residents of Sagar taluk in Shivamogga district on Satuday resolved to begin an indefinite protest opposing the implementation of the Sharavathi Pumped Storage project.
Dinesh Shiravjala, Shivamogga district president of Raitha Sangha, said on Thursday that local residents, leaders of various political parties, and seers of various mutts had opposed the controversial project, which would harm the pristine forest and biodiversity hotspot. “We are launching an indefinite protest opposing the project, in front of the office of the Assistant Commissioner in Sagar. We are appealing to the people and the elected representatives to join the protest,” he stated.
Akhilesh Chipli, an environmentalist, said that the project would damage the ecologically sensitive forest, known for the rare lion-tailed macaque. “The government is still coming up with claims on how the project will benefit the people of Sagar taluk. Even after repeated protests and strong opposition, the Karnataka Power Corporation Limited has not changed its mind. The project has been designed only to benefit the contractors,” he alleged.
