Realising the importance of fire safety measures in the event of fire accidents, residents of a gated community in Old Alwal on Monday celebrated Republic Day with patriotic fervour, adding a special touch by conducting a mock fire drill to handle any untoward incidents.

The demonstration came in the backdrop of a fire accident in one of the apartments on Diwali day, when a mattress caught fire after a lighted lamp fell on it during puja. Timely intervention by residents, including a few trained in handling fire situations, prevented a major mishap.

On Monday, the Board of Directors of Mahalaxmi’s Sai Srinivasam Apartments in Retreat Colony used the Republic Day celebrations to impress upon residents the need to learn basic preventive measures in case of fire accidents. Representatives of Aditya Fire & Safety Systems conducted a demonstration on how to douse a fire.

After the mock drill, the representatives invited youngsters and security personnel of the apartments to gain first-hand experience in using an ABC-type fire extinguisher. They also explained the immediate steps to be taken during an emergency. SSA President Karthik and Treasurer V. Goverdhan Rao said the gated community, which houses over 600 residents, should know the basics of handling fire mishaps. The attempt was to equip residents with first-hand knowledge on handling such situations, they added.

The gated community, consisting of four blocks, is equipped with fire safety equipment as per the guidelines of the Fire Services Department. It may be mentioned that a former Indian Air Force Junior Commissioned Officer, Sushil Tyagi, had earlier donated fire extinguishers worth ₹2 lakh in addition to the existing equipment.
