A remand prisoner allegedly attempted to end his life by slashing his throat with a vegetable-cutting knife inside the kitchen of the Repalle Sub-Jail on Wednesday.

The prisoner, V. Srinivasa Rao, was arrested on July 5 in connection with the murder of an elderly woman and was subsequently remanded in judicial custody. Police said he had surrendered at a police station in connection with the murder case.

According to the police, Mr. Srinivasa Rao entered the jail kitchen in the morning to open a bag of rice. He allegedly picked up a vegetable-cutting knife kept there and slashed his throat. Jail staff noticed him bleeding heavily and immediately shifted him to the Repalle Government Hospital.

After preliminary treatment, he was referred to the Tenali Government Hospital as his condition was serious. Doctors there later advised that he be shifted to the Guntur Government Hospital for better medical care.

Police said Mr. Srinivasa Rao was reportedly distressed over not getting bail. His wife and son had also visited him, officials said.

Based on a complaint lodged by the jail authorities, the Repalle Town police registered a case and launched an investigation.

Superintendent of Police B. Umamaheswar said the police had been closely monitoring the murder case, which was why the accused had not been granted bail. As the crime was committed against a woman, the case had been accorded top priority, he said.

Through the district court monitoring cell, the police were closely following the case, and all bail petitions filed by the accused had been contested in court, Mr. Umamaheswar said.
