The Department of Animal Husbandry in Puducherry has issued an advisory in the wake of detection of H5N1 avian influenza (bird flu) virus in samples collected from a dead crow in Chennai.

The advisory said migratory waterfowl visiting local wetlands may carry the virus without showing symptoms and can potentially transmit it to domestic poultry.

According to an official, surveillance has been intensified in wetlands, poultry farms, and live bird markets in Puducherry. Veterinary teams are conducting awareness and advising farmers to strictly follow biosecurity measures, including preventing contact between wild and domestic birds, restricting farm access, and promptly reporting unusual bird deaths. Rapid response teams are on alert to manage any suspected cases as per Government of India guidelines.

The advisory also cautioned residents not to handle sick or dead birds and to inform the nearest veterinary authority in case of unusual mortality.

The Animal Husbandry Department has also advised personnel to collect all relevant details in respect of source of procurement of chickens, eggs or other products reared or sold. Properly cooked poultry meat and eggs remain safe for consumption and there is no cause for panic, the advisory said.

The situation is being closely monitored and necessary preventive measures are in place to safeguard poultry and public health, the official added.
