Public Mass resumed at St. Mary’s Cathedral Basilica here on Monday evening, after over 1,000 days since the church witnessed a standoff between two sections of the faithful following the dispute over unified Mass.

The evening Mass at 6 a.m. was led by basilica administrator Fr. Thomas Mangatt. On Tuesday, masses were held at 6.30 a.m. and 6 p.m. with participation of the faithful. One Mass on Sundays will be held in the uniform mode of Mass as per the prevailing resolution in the Ernakulam-Angamaly Archdiocese.

“The Masses resumed after it became clear, following an appeal from the basilica administrator before the court concerned, that there is no order preventing the Mass at the cathedral. A consensus over the mode of Masses was reached as the administrator received a reply that there is no hurdle before offering the Mass if the Church leadership permits,” Riju Kaanjookkaran, spokesperson of Almaaya Munnettam, a laity organisation, said in a statement on Tuesday.

The movement urged the Church leadership to implement the consensus reached with priests and believers of the archdiocese in all churches.
