Around 100 protestors were detained on Friday after they attempted to lay siege to the residence of Social Welfare Minister H.C. Mahadevappa, demanding proper implementation of internal reservation. All the protestors were released after a few hours.

The protest, led by Basavaraj Kautal, State Convener of the Scheduled Caste Alliance for Social Justice, involved multiple groups which tried to surround the Minister’s house. However, they were detained upon arrival and kept under preventive custody. The protestors demanded Mr. Mahadevappa’s resignation, accusing him of delaying the implementation process.

According to the protestors, the H.N. Nagamohan Das Commission had categorised Scheduled Castes into five groups and made several recommendations on reservations. However, they alleged, the government reclassified them into three groups for its convenience, and the recommendations have not yet been implemented.

“Principal Secretary P. Manivannan has worked on the issue over the past two days and has promised to resolve it,” Mr. Kautal said.
