A member of the Karnataka State Police Complaints Authority has urged the Director-General and Inspector-General of Police (DG&IGP) to replace metal whistle chains and buttons on the uniforms of lower-rung police personnel with rust-resistant whistle guards and matte-finish buttons.
In a letter dated July 1, authority member Mohan Kumar Danappa said the earlier replacement of the traditional British-era police cap with navy blue peaked caps had been a historic step by the State government and the Police Department.
He said the change had improved the comfort of police personnel, particularly during summer, and enabled them to perform their duties more efficiently.
Mr. Danappa pointed out that the metal whistle chains and buttons currently used on police uniforms are prone to rust due to changing weather conditions. The rust stains damage uniforms and may also lead to skin-related ailments and other health issues, he said.
He noted that several States have already replaced metal whistle chains with khaki- or blue-coloured whistle guards and introduced matte-finish buttons to prevent such problems. Stating that personnel in Karnataka have also sought similar changes, he requested the police chief to examine the proposal and take necessary action.
He further suggested that the department provide whistle guards matching the navy blue peaked caps, or in any other colour chosen by the department, along with matte-finish buttons, keeping in view the health and welfare of police personnel.
