An ambitious project to fill 28 tanks in the Gangavati Assembly constituency, a long-pending demand of farmers in the region, was launched on Thursday with Gangavati MLA Gali Janardhan Reddy performing the groundbreaking ceremony for a ₹153.76-crore pipeline project on the premises of the Durgadevi temple in Indargi village of Koppal district.

The project envisages supplying water through a pipeline network to 28 tanks spread across Gangavati and Koppal taluks in different phases.

The tanks covered under the scheme include Agoli, Hampasadurga, Gaddi, Hemagudda, Malakanamaradi, Bhattaranarasapura and Udmakal under the Udmakal tank system, Chikkabommanal and Challari tanks, Hosur, Hasagal, Kodadal and Hiresulikeri under the Hosur tank system in Koppal taluk, Danakanadoddi, Halahalli, Sangapura, Kal Tavaragere, Bhimanur and Kookanapalli under the Danakanadoddi tank system, and Indargi, Vanaballari, Budagumpa, Hosahalli, Nageshanahalli and Jabbalagudda under the Indargi tank system.

Speaking after inaugurating the work, Mr. Reddy said that the project will bring about a significant transformation in the irrigation landscape of the constituency.

He said that the scheme will ensure water availability in tanks even during periods of deficient rainfall thereby, improving groundwater levels and providing sustained support for agriculture.

He said that the project will also help address drinking water shortage in villages surrounding the tanks, improve water availability for livestock and enhance borewell recharge through groundwater replenishment.

Besides strengthening agriculture, the initiative will contribute to maintaining ecological balance in the region, he added.
