Prime accused in Assam Rifles’ convoy ambush in Manipur arrested, arms recovered

The prime accused in connection with the September 19 ambush on an Assam Rifles’ convoy in Manipur was arrested on Wednesday (September 24, 2025), Manipur’s Director General of Police said.

The person from Imphal West district, identified as Khomdram Ojit Singh@ Keilal (47), admitted that he is an active member of the banned outfit People’s Liberation Army (PLA). At the spot examination, he also said that he is presently on bail, police said. He was earlier arrested on April 22, 2007, the police said.

“During the operation, one person, namely Khomdram Ojit Singh@ Keilal (47) was apprehended… He admitted he is a bailed-out member of PLA… He was directly involved in the ambush,” DGP Rajiv Singh said in a statement.

A large number of arms and ammunition along with a mobile phone, wallet and an Aadhaar card used in the ambush were also recovered based on the inputs provided by the accused,

The attack in Nambol Sabal Leikai area on Friday (September 19, 2025) evening claimed the lives of two personnel. Five others jawans were injured when a group of armed men ambushed a vehicle of the paramilitary force.

Raids are underway to arrest the other culprits involved in the ambush, the police statement added.

On Saturday (September 20), two others were detained in connection with the attack. A silver-blue coloured van, suspected to have been used, was also found at Mutum Yangbi in Imphal West district, around 10 km from the ambush site, police said.
