Kerala Farm Awards: A farmer’s three-decade tryst with organic farming

For 74-year-old K.K. Xaviour, a settler farmer from Poozhithode near Chakkittappara, the State government’s decision to confer the Kera Kesary Award-2025 on him is a recognition of a farming practice he has followed for nearly three decades.

Mr. Xaviour has been selected for the award for his independent efforts to promote organic coconut farming using high-yielding Kuttiyadi coconut saplings. His two-acre coconut plantation, nurtured over the years through organic methods, has been the mainstay of his agricultural activities.

“I planted nearly 100 coconut saplings about 30 years ago. I have been earning a good income from the plantation ever since. Coconut farming can be a profitable enterprise if one is committed to working independently,” says Mr. Xaviour.

He follows only organic farming methods and makes effective use of rainwater to meet the water requirements of his farm. Cow dung and cow urine are used as organic manure to maintain the fertility of the soil without depending on chemical fertilisers.

A recipient of several regional awards for his contributions to farming, Mr. Xaviour belongs to a family that migrated to Chakkittappara from Kottayam district several decades ago. His wife, Alice, has been a constant companion in his agricultural pursuits.

“My three children are abroad now. Alice is my main support. We undertake most of the agricultural work together without relying on external labour,” he says.

Mr. Xaviour’s farm is not confined to coconut cultivation. A keen follower of traditional farming practices, he also cultivates a variety of fruits, different varieties of pepper and arecanut. He manages a one-acre rubber plantation as well for additional income.

For this upland resident, farming is more than a livelihood even at this age, as he is healthy and passionate about carrying out all agricultural jobs in the field. When pursued with dedication and care for the land, it can always be a positive and profitable enterprise for a decent standard of living,” he adds.

Rasma Nair, Agricultural Officer at Chakkittappara Krishi Bhavan, says that Mr. Xaviour has emerged as a model farmer in the village through his innovative approach.
