A pregnant woman was burnt to death after the car in which she was travelling caught fire at Cheruvannur in Kozhikode on Friday night.

The deceased was identified as Sona, 27, wife of Lal Poovathumchal, hailing from Kakkaramukku near Perambra. Police sources said Lal, who was reportedly driving the vehicle, sustained serious burns. He was rushed to the Government Medical College Hospital, Kozhikode.

According to police sources, the accident took place around 9 p.m. The couple was returning home after consulting a gynaecologist. Though locals tried to rescue the passengers, the fire engulfed the vehicle within minutes. As the doors remained locked, Sona could not get out. Her body was later recovered from the rear seat of the vehicle.

The police said they were yet to ascertain the cause of the fire. They added that a detailed investigation was on into the incident.
