Preeti Kamakar was elected Mayor and Hanumant Kongali was elected Deputy Mayor of Belagavi City Corporation in the elections held on Wednesday (March 18, 2026). Ms. Kamakar is member from Ward No. 21, while Hanumant Kongali represents Ward No. 46.

Santosh Pednekar, a city servant from Ward No. 06, who was a strong aspirant for the post of deputy mayor, has been elected as the leader of the ruling party of the corporation.

All are members of the BJP that enjoys a majority in the House. There are 35 BJP members in the 58-member House. Ms. Kamakar belongs to the Nekar weaver community, Mr. Kongali is a Lingayat, and Mr. Pednekar is a Maratha.

BJP district president Geeta Sutar told reporters that the decision was taken in a meeting of the party district Core Committee. Leaders like Abhay Patil, MLA, Anil Benake, former MLA, leaders like Sandeep Deshpande, district secretary and others are present.

MLA Mr Patil said that the candidates were chosen keeping in mind the principal of representation to all communities and taking all communities along and gaining their trust.
