Political executive will decide on Bengal law and order, says SC

The Supreme Court on Monday (May 4, 2026) said the elected political executive in West Bengal would take decisions on law and order, while hearing an urgent oral plea seeking continuation of central forces deployment in the State to prevent post-poll violence after the 2026 Assembly elections.

A Bench of Chief Justice of India Surya Kant and Justice Joymalya Bagchi said the “State of West Bengal will be run by the Political Executive”.
