Kayalvizhi Azhagiri, daughter of former Union Minister M.K. Azhagiri, was arrested by the city police on Tuesday (July 28, 2026) for allegedly slapping a SBI’s NRI Branch Manager, Adyar. However, she was released on station bail following completion of interrogation.

Based on a complaint lodged by Namachivayam, Chief Manager of the State Bank of India, against Ms. Kayalvizhi Azhagiri, a case was registered at the J-5 Shastri Nagar Police Station on July 24, 2026 and an investigation was initiated.

Police said during the investigation, statements were recorded from the complainant and other relevant witnesses. CCTV footage, electronic evidence, and other related documents connected to the incident were also seized in accordance with the law and examined.

Further inquiry revealed that the lift at the bank branch had been out of service. On the morning of July 20, 2026, the Branch Manager Harsheen Singh  informed the building owner, Ms. Kayalvizhi about the issue over the phone. Enraged by the call, she allegedly abused the Branch Manager on the phone. Later that evening, she allegedly visited the bank branch along with one of her relatives, abused the Branch Manager and slapped him, the police said.

The police added based on the findings, a summons under Section 35(3) of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS) was issued to Ms Kayalvizhi Azhagiri on Monday (July 27, 2026). In compliance with the summons, she appeared before the Investigating Officer on Tuesday (July 28, 2026) and was questioned.

She was subsequently arrested and later released on station bail.

Police also said appropriate legal action is being taken to get conviction through the court. Further investigation in the case is under way.
