The Jammu and Kashmir Police on Saturday (February 14, 2026) raised an alert on Jaish-e-Mohammad (JeM) ‘commander’ Saifullah, active in the Chenab Valley’s Kishtwar, amid reports of him escaping from the region. Meanwhile, “unnecessary movement” has been barred within five kilometres from the International Border (IB) in Kathua district owing to ”sensitive situation” and possibility of cross-border firing.

“As we know an (anti-terror) operation was launched more than a month ago in Kishtwar’s Chatroo. One terrorist was killed in the operation. However, the main commander, Saifullah, is still alive and is planning to escape from the region,” said Sandeep Mehta, Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Doda.

The police have pasted posters in parts of Doda to seek public attention. “Saifullah’s pictures, with and without beard, have been put out. In case anyone sees him, the police should be informed. There are reports he may use a burqa to escape from the region,” Mr. Mehta said.

He said the anti-terror operations continue in the region. “An operation was launched in Thathri for four days,” he added.

Meanwhile, the District Magistrate in Kathua imposed orders “to restrict unnecessary movement in border areas”.

“In exercise of the powers vested in me under Section 163 BNSS, I do hereby restrict unnecessary movement in the border area in a strip of 05 Km from the International Border in area of responsibility of the Unit i.e. from Border Outpost (BOP) Paharpur to BOP Karol Krishna,” the order said.

The order said the security situation in the border areas “has become sensitive and there is possibility for cross border firing at any time”.

“Moreover, the movement of heavy vehicles including trucks, tippers and multi-axle vehicles is prohibited on old Samba-Kathua road between 9 p.m. to 6 a.m. This order shall come into force from 14.02.2026 and shall remain in force for a period of 60 days from the date of its issuance or if rescinded, whichever is earlier,” the order added.
