A march taken out by the Kerala Students Union (KSU) to the District Police Chief’s office here on Wednesday ended in the police using force against the protesters. The march was in protest against the alleged police brutality under the Left Democratic Front (LDF) government.

The police allegedly slapped a woman KSU worker on the face and dragged her as she resisted arrest. The police used four rounds of water cannon to disperse the protesters.

Several workers suffered minor injuries in police lathicharge. One of them was admitted to hospital.

The march began from Fort Maidan, and was blocked by the police away from the SP office. KPCC member Rijil Chandran Makkutty inaugurated the march.

He warned the police that several of them would face retribution for their excesses when the United Democratic Front (UDF) comes to power. He accused the police of singling out Congress, Youth Congress and KSU workers and attacking them.

“The protection you enjoy under Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan will not last forever,” he warned the police.

“Thanks to Congress workers’ respect for law and kakhi, some police officers and their families enjoy freedom of movement on the streets,” said Mr. Makkutty.

“Provoking people can lead to backlash. It is like stepping on a snake and expecting it not to bite,” he warned. The Congress leader also slammed the police for treating protesters like traitors.

The police used water cannon as protesters sat on the road even after the inauguration. They were later forcibly removed. A woman police officer allegedly held KSU leader Gouja Vijayakumar by her hair and slapped her on the face. Ms. Vijayakumar alleged that the woman officer had beaten KSU workers earlier too. KSU district president Nikhil Kannadi presided over the meeting.
