Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday (January 11, 2025) flagged off the Metro Rail from the Mahatma Mandir Metro station in Gandhinagar, marking the inauguration of the remaining Phase-II stretch of the Ahmedabad–Gandhinagar Metro project.

Governor Acharya Devvrat, Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel and Deputy Chief Minister Harsh Sanghavi were present on the occasion.

After flagging off the Metro service, the Prime Minister interacted with citizens gathered at the station.

The station witnessed a festive and devotional atmosphere as people waved the national flag and raised slogans of “Jai Somnath, Jai Narendra Bhai ne Jai Somnath.”

As part of the event, Mr. Patel and Mr. Sanghavi travelled by metro on the Phase-II route in Gandhinagar. During the journey, the Chief Minister interacted with commuters and students and sought feedback on the Metro services, reiterating the State government’s commitment to providing modern, efficient and fast public transport.

Providing details of the project, Director (Project and Planning) of the Metro Rail, Anand Singh Bisht, said the Ahmedabad–Gandhinagar Metro Rail was first inaugurated in Ahmedabad in October 2022. In September 2024, the Prime Minister had inaugurated the Metro services from Motera to Sector-1, along with extensions up to Gujarat National Law University (GNLU) and GIFT City.

With Sunday’s inauguration, the remaining Phase-II stretch comprising seven Metro stations over a distance of 7.8 km had become operational. Mr. Bisht said that during Phase-I, the Metro recorded an average daily ridership of around 35,000 passengers. With Phases I and II now fully integrated, daily ridership had increased to approximately 1.60 lakh passengers commuting between Ahmedabad and Gandhinagar, reflecting a rise of nearly 60%.
