Mumbai: Sarabjeet Singh Sandhu, a name familiar to many across Mumbai for his extensive social work, has now entered the electoral arena as an independent candidate from Ward 86 (Marol). Known for his on-ground presence during crises and community-driven initiatives, Sarabjeet Singh Sandhu’s work over the years has given him recognition beyond his immediate constituency.

Sarabjeet Singh Sandhu first came into wider public notice during the COVID-19 pandemic, when he was actively involved in large-scale relief efforts across several parts of the city. At a time when livelihoods were disrupted and access to essentials was uncertain, Sarabjeet Singh Sandhu coordinated the daily distribution of food to nearly 5,000 people, ensuring support reached migrant workers, daily wage earners, and families affected by lockdowns. In addition, ration kits were distributed to nearly 10,000 people, helping households manage prolonged periods of economic stress. Residents recall that these efforts continued consistently through multiple phases of the pandemic.

Alongside food relief, Sarabjeet Singh Sandhu also assisted in vaccination awareness and coordination, helping residents navigate appointment systems and access nearby centres. During the period of acute medical shortages, he was also involved in facilitating oxygen cylinders for patients in need, a role that many families credit with timely intervention during a critical phase of the health crisis.Beyond pandemic-related work, Sarabjeet Singh Sandhu has been associated with several community welfare initiatives across Marol, Chimatpada, and Sahar. In Sahar, he organised a dedicated programme for persons with disabilities, during which wheelchairs were distributed free of cost to beneficiaries. The event was attended by local residents and caregivers, and was noted for addressing practical challenges faced by people with limited mobility.

Education support has been another area of focus. In Marol, Sarabjeet Singh Sandhu coordinated the distribution of study kits to children from economically weaker sections, particularly at a time when families were struggling to meet basic educational expenses. Parents and community members said such initiatives helped ensure that children were able to continue their schooling with essential supplies.More recently, Sarabjeet Singh Sandhu and his team organised a community programme that highlighted the contribution of workers from the gig economy. During the event, a Swiggy delivery partner won a scooty as a prize, a gesture that attendees described as an acknowledgement of the efforts of delivery workers who remained active even during difficult periods for the city.

With his decision to contest elections, Sarabjeet Singh Sandhu is now seeking to translate his community engagement into formal civic participation. He is contesting as an independent candidate from Ward 86, Marol, and has been allotted the bat as his election symbol. Observers note that independent candidates in Mumbai often rely on personal credibility and local connections, areas where Sarabjeet Singh Sandhu is considered to have established visibility.

Sarabjeet Singh Sandhu has been politically active for several years, with his work often intersecting civic issues and local governance. His decision to contest the current election as an independent candidate is seen as a continuation of his political engagement, rather than a departure from it.In the current civic contest, Sarabjeet Singh Sandhu is contesting from Ward 86, Marol, with the bat as his election symbol.

As campaigning progresses, attention remains on how his established presence across neighbourhoods and familiarity with local issues will shape the electoral dynamics in the ward.
