The Kerala State Pollution Control Board (PCB) has written to Vadavucode-Puthecruz panchayat to submit an action-taken report on illegal plastic waste dumping on a private land at Brahmapuram.
The District Office (Ernakulam-2) of the Board in Perumbavoor also asked the Station House Officer of the Infopark police station to furnish details of action taken against illegal dumping.
A report prepared by the PCB submitted before the Southern Bench of the National Green Tribunal said that the Board had inspected the land, where a fire outbreak was reported March 4 and 28 last year. The land was overgrown with plants and appeared to be an abandoned site. No activity was detected there, it said.
Vadavucode-Puthencruz panchayat had earlier slapped a penalty of ₹1 lakh on a private firm for dumping plastic waste on its land at Brahmapuram, which is located close to an agricultural land. The tribunal had taken suo motu notice of the incident and had asked the PCB to inspect the site and submit a report.
Besides plastic waste, the site was used for dumping construction and demolition waste. After the fire outbreak, the area was levelled using soil. The Board had informed the tribunal that the fire erupted from the garbage and plastic kept illegally on the land. The remains of burnt plastic were also seen during the inspection.
