A large number of pass holders were denied entry into Mysuru palace on Thursday to watch Jamboo Savari, the grand finale of the Dasara festival.
The Brahmagiri Gate on the western side of the palace premises was the entrance assigned to ‘invitee’ pass holders for the Jamboo Savari.
But, when they reached the gate, they were denied entry by the police on the grounds that all the seats assigned to their enclosure on the palace premises had been filled up.
Police personnel manning the Brahmagiri Gate told The Hindu that they had received instructions not to allow anyone into the palace premises as there was no space in the enclosure.
While a few dejected pass holders walked away and jostled with others to find space in the crowded footpaths, many continued to wait outside the gate, holding the passes in their hands.
“We came here around 12.30 p.m., much before the start of the procession. But, we were denied entry on the grounds that the seats were already taken. Why did the authorities issue passes in excess of the seats?”, questioned a disappointed pass holder.
A statement by the City Police Commissioner Seema Latkar on Tuesday said several strict measures had been put in place for the Jamboo Savari and Torch Light Parade programme, while asking the public to follow the instructions issued by the police in their interest in the light of the stampedes taking place outside Chinnaswamy stadium in Bengaluru and at film actor Vijay’s rally in Karur.

A similiar complaint was heard by gold card holders, who alleged that they were turned away from the enclosure assigned to them on the grounds that there was no space.
They were blaming the district administration for the lapses, while pointing out that they had paid ₹6,500 for the gold cards.

While valid pass holders were denied entry on the grounds that the enclosures assigned to them were already full, several visitors were turned away by the security personnel at the entrances, who claimed their passes were ‘fake.’
The security personnel, who seized a ‘pass’ from a woman at Brahmagiri gate, removed a bunch of similiarly confiscated passes and claimed that they were all ‘duplicate’ passes. He neither allowed the woman entry nor did he oblige her request to return the ‘duplicate’ pass.
Deputy Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar made a late entry to the Nandi Dhwaja puja outside the north gate of Mysuru Palace on Thursday.
Though Chief Minister Siddaramaiah and his entourage comprising a number of his Cabinet colleagues arrived at the spot in KSRTC’s Airavatha Club Class bus on time for the Nandi Dhwaja puja, Mr. Shivakumar made an entry after the Chief Minister had performed the puja.
However, Mr. Shivakumar performed the puja again and spoke to the media before joining Mr. Siddaramaiah in an open vehicle, which went into the palace premises.
