Bengaluru residents who use public roads for parking outside their homes may have to pay an annual fee of up to ₹25,000 or more, depending on the type of car, under the draft Greater Bengaluru Authority (Parking) Rules, 2026, published by the Karnataka Government on Tuesday.

However, it states that residential parking on streets other than arterial and sub-arterial roads may be allowed only for vehicles that have been issued a residential parking permit by the respective city corporation. The permits, however, will be given to only residents of residential buildings that are not in violation of minimum parking requirements specified in the building bylaws.

So, if a resident living in a house with inadequate parking inside the premises, as per building bylaws, parks their car on the roads in front of their houses, it will be deemed illegal and may attract fines under the illegal parking violation by the Bengaluru Traffic Police (BTP).

To avoid that, citizens will have to resort to parking at a facility (off-street parking), for which the charges are exorbitant too.

SUV? Pay ₹25,000

The draft rules propose a minimum annual residential parking permit fee of ₹15,000 for hatchbacks, ₹20,000 for sedans, and ₹25,000 for sports utility vehicles (SUVs). The city corporations may also levy an additional administrative fee for issuing the permits, with the amount to be fixed by the GBA Chief Commissioner.

The permit will be issued against a vehicle and the name associated with its registration number. It will be valid for a year and can be renewed annually after verifying that the applicant still lives in the area. The permit will also be valid only on roads designated for residential parking within a walkable distance of the resident’s home. Parking outside the permitted area will also be treated as a violation.

On collector (non-arterial) roads, residential parking will be permitted only if at least six metres of road space remain available for traffic and 1.8 metres of clear walking space are maintained on both sides. On local roads, at least four metres must remain available for traffic, and a 1.8-metre clear footpath must be maintained on at least one side after a vehicle is parked.

Marshals in corporations or other designated employees may verify the validity of permits and report violations to the police. Traffic police will enforce no-parking provisions, including ensuring that only vehicles with valid residential parking permits are allowed in designated residential parking areas. The government has invited objections and suggestions.
