The Chamarajanagar district police have arrested five persons, including the parents of a newborn girl sold for ₹50,000 to a couple in Arakalgud taluk of Hassan district.

The baby girl was born at Chamarajanagar district hospital on July 26, 2025 to Sindhu and Manjunayak, a couple from Ramasamudra in Chamarajanagar town.

When the Child Development Project Officer of Chamarajanagar noticed that the newborn girl was not in her parents’ custody, a complaint was lodged with the Chamarajanagar Town Police Station on September 15, 2025.

A case was registered by the police and an investigation into the matter began.

The baby’s parents, who had been absconding for about six months, were traced using technical and scientific investigation methods, said a police statement.

When they were taken into custody and interrogated on January 23, 2026, the parents — Manjunayak and Sindhu — revealed that they had sold the baby for ₹50,000 through a Group D employee at Cheluvamba Hospital in Mysuru to a couple identified as Javaraiah and Netra, residents of Konnanuru village in Arakalgud taluk of Hassan district.

The six-month-old baby was found in the care of Javaraiah and Netra by the police. The baby was rescued and handed over to the Child Development Department. “The child is healthy and doing well,” said a statement issued by the Chamarajanagar district police.

The intermediary from Cheluvamba Hospital in Mysuru, Shantha, the baby’s parents Manjunayak and Sindhu and the purchasers Javaraiah and Netra have all been arrested.

They were produced before the court and remanded in judicial custody.

A statement said the detection was carried out under the guidance of Superintendent of Chamarajanagar district Police M. Muthuraj, Additional Superintendent of Police, Shashidhar M.N., Deputy Superintendent of Police Sneharaj, police inspector Jagadish and police sub inspector R. Manjunath.
