Traffic police conduct a drunk-driving check in Hyderabad
Over 800 individuals were booked for driving under the influence of alcohol during a weekend-special enforcement drive carried out between December 19 and 20
In Cyberabad, 409 motorists were booked, with two-wheeler riders accounting for the bulk of the violations with 290 cases, followed by 95 four-wheelers and 23 three-wheelers. One heavy vehicle driver was also found driving under the influence.
Data released by the police shows that alcohol consumption levels among those caught were significant. As many as 352 offenders recorded blood alcohol concentration levels between 35 mg/100 ml and 200 mg/100 ml, while 37 drivers were found with levels ranging from 201 mg/100 ml to 300 mg/100 ml. This apart, 20 motorists had alarmingly high BAC levels between 301 mg/100 ml and 550 mg/100 ml. All those apprehended will be produced before the court.
The Cyberabad Traffic Police reiterated that drunken driving remains a serious offence with severe legal consequences. Officials warned that if a person driving in an inebriated condition causes a fatal accident, the accused will be booked under Section 105 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, 2023, which deals with culpable homicide not amounting to murder and carries a maximum punishment of up to 10 years of imprisonment along with a fine.
During the previous week, between December 15 and 20, a total of 756 drunk-driving cases were disposed of in the court. Of these, two offenders were sentenced to a combination of fine and social service, while 754 were penalised with fines alone.
Meanwhile, the Hyderabad traffic police booked 403 motorists. Here too, two-wheeler riders formed the majority of offenders with 320 cases, followed by 59 four-wheelers and 23 three-wheelers. One heavy vehicle driver was also found driving under the influence of alcohol
Officials said there would be zero tolerance towards drunken driving and said such special drives would continue. Commuters were urged to cooperate with traffic personnel to ensure safer roads.
