A fishing expedition turned tragic after a boat capsized in rough seas, leaving one person dead and two others missing. The victims belong to the same family and the search for missing persons is on. The deceased has been identified as 76-year-old Rajeevan, a fisher and the boat’s owner residing at Puthanthura. Search operations are currently underway to locate his relatives, Radhakrishnan, 47, and Gautam Krishna, 26.
The accident occurred on Friday morning near the Neendakara groyne (pulimuttu). The fishing vessel named ‘Meomi’, carrying 14 crew members, was hit by violent waves and overturned. Nearby fishers immediately rushed to the scene to initiate rescue efforts. Upon receiving information, teams from the Coast Guard, the Fisheries department, Marine Enforcement, and the Fire Force arrived to carry out a coordinated search operation. Rajeevan was pulled from the water in critical condition and rushed to a nearby hospital, but his life could not be saved.
Eleven other crew members, including five migrant workers, were successfully rescued from the capsized vessel. Preliminary investigations suggest that turbulent sea conditions and strong crashing waves caused the boat to flip. This incident marks the second major fishing boat accident in the region within three days. On Wednesday morning, another vessel met with an accident near the Tangasseri breakwater, claiming the life of a fisherman named Royson, whose body was recovered the following night.
