Telangana Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy has reiterated his Government’s commitment to make women crorepatis (multi millionaires) and said a series of programmes have been initiated for their empowerment in this direction.

Drawing inspiration from former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi, the Government has encouraged women to operate petrol pumps and enabled women’s groups to own 1,000 buses being operated on lease by the Telangana State Road Transport Corporation (TGSRTC), he said. In addition to distribution of houses under Indiramma Indlu, weaker section housing scheme in the name of women, the Government was focused on giving due priority to women in politics.

The Chief Minister was speaking after formally launching Indiramma Sarees scheme, aimed at distribution of sarees to one crore women, in Hyderabad on Wednesday (November 19, 2025). He said the scheme was conceived in line with the Government’s commitment to make women millionaires and it was started coinciding with the birth anniversary of the former Prime Minister.

Distribution in two phases

Distribution of the sarees would be taken up in two phases – the first phase till December 9 covering all the women in rural areas and the second phase between March 1 and 8 in the . It was proposed to take up the scheme in two phases as weavers from Sircilla would get adequate time for weaving the sarees.

65 lakh sarees in rural areas under first phase

The first phase of the programme would involve distribution of 65 lakh sarees to women in rural areas followed by the remaining 35 lakh during the second phase in March. “All women including Ministers, MLAs, women officers should wear Indiramma sarees. They should become the brand ambassadors in protecting the self respect of women,” he said assuring that the Government was firm on covering all the eligible women.

Mr. Reddy, who paid rich tributes to Indira Gandhi on her anniversary, reminded that she took over the reins when there was political vacuum in the country. Working to implement the ideals cherished by Dr. B.R. Ambedkar, Indira Gandhi brought in far reaching reforms like nationalisation of banks, land ceiling act, distribution of land to poor and weaker section housing programmes. At the same time, she effectively led the country in the war against Pakistan giving strong leadership.
