Engineers must use their technical knowledge to address problems confronting society, particularly those affecting the economically disadvantaged, while building their careers on character, integrity and purpose, Texas Instruments India Managing Director Santhosh Kumar said at the 24th convocation of the National Institute of Technology (NIT), Warangal, on Saturday.
“Engineering should not be confined to technology and innovation but should contribute to improving the lives of people at the bottom of the socio-economic pyramid,” he added.
Degrees were conferred on 930 undergraduate graduands and 22 exit-degree recipients on the first day of the two-day convocation. Postgraduate and Ph.D. degrees will be awarded on Sunday.

Board of Governors chairman B.V.R. Mohan Reddy, speaking on “The Role of the Engineer in the AI Era”, said Artificial Intelligence could process vast amounts of information and identify patterns, but human judgement, values and purpose would remain indispensable. He asked the graduates to work with AI while retaining strong domain expertise and to apply their skills to problems relevant to India.
Presenting the Director’s Report, NIT-Warangal Director Bidyadhar Subudhi said the institute had introduced several new programme including new M.Tech. programmes in Quantum Technology, Artificial Intelligence, Electric Vehicles and Materials Science and Technology for 2026-27.
The institute has 162 sanctioned research projects and it recorded a 93.94% placement rate among undergraduate student, he added.
Micron India Managing Director Anand Ramamoorthy an honorary Ph.D. in recognition of his contribution towards advancing India’s semiconductor ambition at NIT convocation.
Siddhi Barpute, a Chemical Engineering student, received the Director’s Gold Medal as the overall undergraduate topper. The Roll of Honour Gold Medals for B.Tech. programmes were awarded to Priyanshu Kumar Singh (Civil Engineering), Nalajala Joshit (Electrical and Electronics Engineering), Valusa Raghuvaran (Mechanical Engineering), Dondapati Lokeshwar (Electronics and Communication Engineering), Madagani Sathvik (Metallurgical and Materials Engineering), Siddhi Barpute (Chemical Engineering), Jayanthi Anshu (Computer Science and Engineering) and Aman Abdulsamad Inamdar (Biotechnology).
The Best B.Tech. Project Award went to Budda Jeshwanthi of Mechanical Engineering for her project, “Experimental Investigations on a Compact Dual Cell Passive DMFC and Stack Design for Power Generation.”
Honorary degrees were conferred on P.K. Menon and Micron India Managing Director Anand Ramamoorthy for their contributions to aviation and aerospace engineering and India’s semiconductor sector, respectively.
