Telangana Rakshana Samithi (TRS) chief Kalvakuntla Kavitha criticised the Union Government’s recent policy mandating domestic battery manufacturing for players in the renewable energy sector, alleging that the move would adversely affect small and medium-scale enterprises (SMEs).

In a post on social media, Ms. Kavitha claimed that a majority of solar panel manufacturers in India currently depend on battery imports from China and in India, only the Adani and Ambani groups possess this capability. This policy clearly favours these two conglomerates at the direct expense of numerous smaller players.

She alleged that the new mandate would disproportionately benefit major conglomerates while placing smaller manufacturers at a competitive disadvantage. According to Ms. Kavitha, the policy could threaten the survival of numerous SMEs operating in the renewable energy sector.

While acknowledging the need for reforms in the industry, the BRS leader argued that businesses should be given adequate time to transition to new regulations. She said the implementation timeline provided by the Centre was too short for smaller companies to adapt to the new requirements.

Ms. Kavitha urged the Union Government to immediately withdraw the order or provide a reasonable transition period, stating that such measures were necessary to protect small and medium-scale manufacturers and ensure fair competition in the renewable energy market.
