The Subramanyapura police arrested a 23-year-old mechanic for allegedly abducting a 19-year-old CA student to forcefully marry her. They also rescued the girl.

After the victim’s parents filed a complaint, the police swung into action and arrested Ranganath, an accused in a murder case, and three of his associates Rajesh B., 26, Chandan, 23, Shreyas, 30, and Manjunath, 20, within 12 hours of the offence.

According to the police, the incident occurred on Wednesday around 5.15 pm, when he and his associates, allegedly armed with weapons, barged into the victim’s house in Simhadri Layout, Chikkallasandra, while she was having tea with her mother. The accused then allegedly overpowered the mother, bundled the girl into an auto, and sped away.

When her mother, a house help, and her grandmother tried to intervene, the suspects swung machetes at them to induce fear, slightly injuring them.

The Subramanyapura police used the CCTV footage to track down the accused. The probe revealed that Ranganath had been previously jailed in a murder case. After his release, he allegedly began pestering the girl, who stayed near his house, to marry him. A month ago, he had allegedly created a ruckus outside the girl’s house twice, asking her to marry him.

The police have booked Ranganath and his associates under Sections 78 (Stalking), 87 (Kidnapping, abducting or inducing woman to compel her marriage), 118(1) (Voluntarily causing hurt or grievous hurt by dangerous weapons or means), 189(2) (Unlawful assembly), 329(4) (Criminal trespass and house trespass) and 351(2) (Criminal intimidation) of the BNS .

The accused have been produced before the court and remanded to judicial custody.
