Two pregnant women died on Sunday (October 4, 2026) in Bihar’s Jamui Sadar Hospital due to the unavailability of doctors. The family members accused the doctors of negligence and staged a protest by placing the bodies at the hospital’s main gate.

There was tension after Bihar Minister and Jamui MLA Shreyasi Singh went to the hospital and slammed the hospital management, the video of which went viral.

In both cases, the family members alleged that the female doctor on duty was absent and that timely medical treatment was not provided. One woman died before delivery, while the other died after an operation.

The angry family members placed the bodies at the hospital’s main gate and demanded action against the responsible doctors.

One of the deceased, Anita Kumari, 28, was initially taken to the Primary Health Centre on Saturday night (October 3) after experiencing labour pain, from where she was referred to the Sadar Hospital, said the family members.

Anita was brought to the Sadar Hospital around 11 p.m., where no doctor was present in the labour room. Health workers told the family members that the doctor would arrive only after an initial assessment, but the woman’s condition continued to deteriorate throughout the night. She passed away around 5 a.m. on Sunday.

Aastha Kumari (26) from Chauhandih village died after giving birth to a baby boy. Her condition was stable after the surgery, but her health deteriorated around midnight. The family alleged that the female doctor was not present in the duty room. Although her condition improved briefly after treatment by the doctor on emergency duty, her health worsened again on Sunday morning, and she passed away around 10 a.m.

The family alleged that Aastha did not receive regular medical monitoring after the surgery. A blood transfusion was suggested for the morning, but she died before blood could be arranged.

A family member said Aastha’s husband Ratan Singh died in a road accident about four months ago, and now, the newborn son had also lost his mother.

As per the hospital management, Dr. Shalini was on duty from 8 p.m. Saturday to 8 a.m. Sunday, but according to family members, she was absent from duty throughout the night.

Demands explanation

Jamui MLA Ms. Singh chided the doctors and inquired about the female doctor who was not present on the hospital premises. She first met the aggrieved family members and then demanded an explanation from the hospital Deputy Superintendent, Dr. Thanish Kumar.

A video of the MLA shouting at the hospital management has gone viral, where she was seen asking why the patient’s critical condition was not treated with seriousness.

In the video, the Minister also raised questions on the absence of Dr. Shalini and asked why the concerned female doctor was not called, noting that patients required medical supervision even at midnight.

Ms. Singh said strict action must be taken against doctors found guilty. She said she would also speak to Health Minister Nishant Kumar and Chief Minister Samrat Choudhary over the issue. Later, Ms. Singh met the District Magistrate, who informed her that a three-member committee headed by the Deputy Development Commissioner had been formed to conduct an inquiry and submit its report within 24 hours.
