NCRB report: Telangana crimes make up 2.9% of India’s total in 2023

Telangana contributed 2.9% of India’s total crimes in 2023, with 1,83,644 cases recorded under the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and Special and Local Laws (SLL), according to the latest National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) data. This marks a rise from 1,65,830 cases in 2022.

The NCRB released its latest report on September 30.

As per the report, Telangana ranked eighth among Indian states in terms of total reported cases. Uttar Pradesh topped the list with 7,93,020 cases (12.7%), followed by Maharashtra with 5,96,103 (9.6%), Kerala with 5,84,373 (9.4%), Tamil Nadu with 5,39,651 (8.6%), Madhya Pradesh with 4,95,708 (7.9%), Bihar with 3,53,502 (5.7%) and Karnataka with 2,14,234 (3.4%).

The State’s charge-sheeting rate was 77.4% in 2023, slightly lower than the national average of 80.1%. Kerala reported one of the highest at 97.9%, while Delhi remained the lowest at 32.8%.

At the city level, Hyderabad accounted for 25,749 cases in 2023, making up 2.7% of crimes reported across 19 major metropolitan cities. The city’s crime rate of 332.3 per lakh population placed it in the mid-range compared to other metros. Delhi dominated with 3,43,483 cases, representing 36.3% of metro crimes, while Kochi reported the highest crime rate of 3,192.4.

Telangana ranked second among metropolitan States in violent crimes, with 10,069 incidents in 2023, a 4.1% increase from 9,673 in 2022. The state’s share of the country’s violent crimes stood at 2.3%.

Murder cases rose marginally to 954 from 937 in 2022. Attempt to murder cases increased to 1,605, while grievous hurt stood at 1,480. Kidnapping and abduction cases were 3,174. Robberies totalled 526, accounting for 2.7% of India’s 19,169 such cases. Arson cases reached 569, making up 4.5% of the national tally, while rioting fell slightly to 502.

Crimes against children dropped to 2,211 from 2,312 in 2022, contributing 2.3% of India’s 95,468 such cases. Negligent road accident deaths totalled 7,797, while 1,634 individuals were victims of hit-and-run accidents.

In Hyderabad, violent crimes rose to 1,483 compared to 1,364 in 2022. Kidnapping and abduction cases stood at 592, higher than Chennai (27) and Kolkata (281), though far fewer than Delhi (5,867). The city reported 173 rapes, above Chennai (20) and Kolkata (10) but well below Delhi (1,088). Robberies totalled 102, contributing 1.3% of metro robberies.

Crimes against children in Hyderabad increased to 724 from 681 the previous year, making up 3.6% of metropolitan cases. The city ranked above Chennai (551) and Kolkata (228), though still behind Bengaluru (1,042) and Mumbai (1,038).

According to the NCRB, the top metropolitan cities for violent crimes in 2023 were Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Lucknow and Hyderabad.
