The ruling National Conference (NC) has introduced a resolution in the Jammu and Kashmir Assembly for the return of power projects run by the National Hydroelectric Power Corporation (NHPC) to Jammu and Kashmir.

In the resolution, NC leader Sajad Shaheen sought the House’s nod to “recommend that the Government of India consider a phased and mutually agreed transfer of operational control and/or ownership rights of the running hydroelectric power projects presently operated by NHPC”.

Mr. Shaheen’s resolution calls for a consultation with the Union Territory government and other stakeholders “in accordance with Constitutional provisions, existing laws, and inter-governmental arrangements”.

The return of the projects managed by the NHPC to J&K has been old demand of the NC, and often finds place in the party’s manifesto.

“We have clearly stated in our manifesto that some power projects should be given back to J&K. It is a genuine demand. We will follow it up,” NC leader and legislator Tanvir Sadiq said.

The transfer of the hydropower projects remained “critical for the region”. “J&K should get its rights back. Return of NHPC projects is a genuine demand,” Mr. Sadiq said.
