BJP Tamil Nadu president Nainar Nagenthran on Sunday called on Union Home Minister Amit Shah at his residence in New Delhi.

Speaking to The Hindu, Mr. Nagenthran said he held a meeting with Mr. Shah for nearly half an hour. When asked about his discussions with the Home Minister, who is also the election strategist for the BJP, Mr. Nagenthran said it was only a courtesy call and he had not discussed anything related to alliance.

Mr. Nagenthran’s meeting with Mr. Shah gains significance against the backdrop of speculation over a possible expansion of the National Democratic Alliance in Tamil Nadu. Earlier on Saturday, he met Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman and handed over a set of petitions pertaining to the Finance Ministry. These petitions were received from the public during Mr. Nagenthran’s State-wide tour.

Mr. Nagenthran had called on AIADMK general secretary Edappadi K. Palaniswami in Chennai on December 11 and held an hour-long discussion. He would meet the newly appointed working president of the BJP Nitin Nabin on Monday. In a social media post on Sunday, Mr. Palaniswami congratulated Mr. Nabin on his appointment as BJP’s national working president.
