Belagavi police have arrested nine persons in connection with a mob setting fire to a truck that was allegedly carrying beef. in Ainapur near Raibag in Belagavi district of Karnataka, on September 22 night.

Members of some right-wing organisations waylaid the lorry near Sri Siddeshwar temple on Ugar-Ainapur road. They accused the driver of smuggling beef and allegedly assaulted him. They claimed to have inspected the lorry and found several tonnes of beef being transported from Kudachi to Hyderabad in Telangana. The mob set fire to the lorry. The vehicle was burnt before the police could reach the site.

Fire and emergency services personnel and staff of the Ugar sugar factory doused the fire.

A team of police officers, including Sub-inspector Raghavendra Khot, visited the spot.

Superintendent of Police Bheemashankar S. Guled said that the the police registered two cases.

One case was booked under the cow slaughter Act and Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act, and three persons were arrested.

Six persons were arrested in the second case registered under BNS provisions of arson, robbery and prevention of atrocity against SC/ST s Act.

The main accused in the first case was arrested in Kalaburagi on September 23 morning.
