In Maharashtra, the ruling Mahayuti won two seats in the Legislative Council elections. The results for two of the five teachers’ and graduates’ constituencies in the State were officially declared by the Maharashtra Chief Electoral Officer late at night on Wednesday (October 28, 2026). The Bharatiya Janata Party won the Pune Teachers’ constituency, while the Shiv Sena won the Amravati Teachers’ constituency.

Counting was going on for the remaining three seats for the second consecutive day on Wednesday (October 28, 2026). The result for the third seat of the Pune Graduates’ constituency was expected to be declared late at night on Wednesday (October 28, 2026). NCP Sharadchandra Pawar group was leading on the seat till this report went to print.

Meanwhile, the election proved to be a major setback for the ruling NCP, which could not open its account. The dismal trend and the lead taken by NCP SP on the single seat allocated to NCP irked senior leader Praful Patel. “Today’s Vidhan Parishad election results serve as a definitive wake-up call. The time has come for urgent introspection to rebuild trust, realign our priorities, and fix our organisational structure,” he posted on his social media handle X. He had earlier expressed displeasure at the party being denied the Pune seat during the seat distribution talks with allies.

Mahayuti VS Mahayuti in Pune

The Teachers’ constituency of Pune had drawn attention in the State for the fight between the Mahayuti partners. The seat was with Congress, which lost in the battle between the two alliance partners. During the seat-sharing talks, the seat was officially given to the BJP, and the Shiv Sena had backed another candidate. On Wednesday (October 28, 2026), BJP candidate Kaustubh Gawade defeated Shiv Sena-backed candidate Sachin Sanap and Congress’ sitting MLC Jayant Asagaonkar. Mr Sanap was an OSD to Sena minister Uday Samant.

Sena wins Amravati despite internal strife

Shiv Sena’s Kiran Ramrao Sarnaik won the Amravati Teachers’ constituency for the second time, despite internal strife and rebellions in the Mahayuti. He defeated Congress’ Aditi Pohare and independent candidate Shrikant Deshpande. In Amravati Teachers’ constituency, the BJP and the Shiv Sena have traditionally fought against each other. After the seat was declared to the Shiv Sena in the seat distribution talks, some BJP leaders had rebelled. Three BJP rebels had filed nominations as independents. The party had to expel all three of them. Thereafter, Maharashtra minister and BJP leader Chandrashekhar Bawankule had appealed to Eknath Shinde to act against Sena rebel Shrikant Deshpande. On Wednesday (October 28, 2026), Shiv Sena’s official candidate Mr. Sarnaik, defeated him.

The counting for the three other seats continued for the second day on Wednesday (October 28, 2026). Results were likely to be declared for the third seat of the Pune Graduates’ constituency, where NCP SP’s candidate was leading in the rounds of votes counted till then.
