Gurmitkal MLA Sharanagouda Kandkur has urged Union Finance and Corporate Affairs Minister Nirmala Sitharaman to establish a Special Economic Zone (SEZ) in the Gurmitkal Assembly Constituency to give a boost to industries and ensure jobs for youths.

He was addressing a gathering after participating in the inauguration programme for a Farmers Training Centre and Common Facility Centre (CFC) at Baddepalli village in Gurmitkal taluk of Yadgir district on Thursday.

Mr. Kandkur said that Gurmitkal constituency remains the most backward among others in the Kalyan Karnataka region with backwardness in the education, health and industrial sectors, while lacking infrastructure.

“It is my privilege to submit my request to you to attend to long-term issues involving backwardness. Industries should be established for providing youths jobs based on their educational qualifications. I request you to take the necessary action to establish SEZ here to eradicate growing economic imbalances,” Mr. Kandkur said.

The MLA also said that maternal and infant deaths are high. The problem of malnutrition among women and lactating mothers is growing and is not being attended to effectively. The lack of infrastructure in education and health sectors is continuously affecting women who are stepping back from getting higher education. Migration to big cities in search of jobs is rampant. The people of rural areas are forced to drink contaminated water due to lack of proper water supply, he said.

“Yadgir district has been declared an aspirational district by the NITI Aayog. The Union government should launch initiatives to attend to all growing problems and declare a special financial aid for the constituency,” he added.

Mr. Kandkur also urged Ms. Sitharaman to take initiatives to upgrade the Railway Coach Factory that has been established in the Kadechur-Badiyal Industrial Hub and also, the Sindgi-Kodangal National Highway which project has been pending for years. He said that the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) should be set up either in Raichur or Yadgir for the benefit of the people.

He then submitted a memorandum to the Central Finance Minister.

Responding to him in her speech, Ms. Sitharaman said that she will take up the issues with the departments concerned under the Union government for suitable action.
