Communist Party of India (CPI) MLA and former Minister K. Rajan has urged Home Minister Ramesh Chennithala to order a comprehensive probe into the police vehicle accident at Aloor that claimed the life of a school student and left another critically injured, besides providing immediate compensation to their families.
In a letter to the Home Minister, Mr. Rajan sought adequate financial assistance for the family of the deceased student, Juvin Raj, 16, and the family of Ananthu, who is undergoing treatment. He also demanded that the State government bear the entire cost of Ananthu’s treatment.
The accident occurred on June 15, when Juvin Raj and Ananthu, both residents of Aloor, were returning home from school on an electric scooter. The scooter was allegedly hit by a Kerala Police vehicle on the Potta-Irinjalakuda Road while the students were taking a right turn towards Aanathadam Road.
Citing eyewitness accounts, CCTV footage, and physical evidence at the accident site, Mr. Rajan alleged that another vehicle following the students had slowed down to allow them to turn, but the police vehicle, allegedly being driven at high speed, overtook that vehicle and rammed the scooter.
‘No fitness certificate’
The MLA also alleged that the police vehicle did not possess a valid fitness certificate and claimed that tyre marks at the scene indicated braking on only one wheel. He further alleged that the vehicle had been travelling at excessive speed from the time it left Chalakudy and that there was a serious lapse on the part of the police in arranging an ambulance immediately after the accident.
Juvin Raj succumbed to his injuries on June 23 while undergoing treatment. Ananthu remains under intensive care. Mr. Rajan pointed out that the FIR registered by the Aloor police attributed the accident to the negligence of the police driver.
Organ donation
Referring to Juvin Raj’s organ donation, through which seven persons received life-saving organs after his death, Mr. Rajan said the student and his family had set an exemplary model for society. He questioned whether the government had extended adequate support to the bereaved family despite their humanitarian gesture.
The MLA called for a thorough investigation into the incident, strict legal action against those responsible, immediate compensation for both families, and full government support for the continuing medical treatment of the injured student.
